Didn't like this *quite* as much as American Gods, but it was a quick compelling read with a very sympathetic protagonist. To an extent it was almost a verwendungsroman - but as might be expected from Gaiman there was a twist. In addition to American Gods it would also be difficult not to compare it to Stardust - given the idea of transformations and coming to understand one's own powers and lineage in it.

I think the only reason I didn't like it quite as much as its kinda-sorta prequel was that drawing on only one mythological tradition, it felt less rich and deep. Still, a very good read.
