Big Sky Country (Swoon-Worthy Cowboys, #1)
by Linda Lael Miller
by Linda Lael Miller
Book: Big Sky Country
Author: Linda Lael Miller
Series: Parable #1
Genre: Contemporary western romance
Summary: As the illegitimate son of a wealthy rancher who never acknowledged him, Sheriff Slade Barlow has spent his life on the outside looking in. So Slade is surprised when his father dies and leaves Slade half of the family ranch — along with his half-brother Hutch Carmody. Hutch wants to buy Slade out, but Slade decides to take some time to think things over and come to terms with how he feels about his father and new wealth. Also distracting Slade is Joslyn Kirk, who’s come back to town to make amends for her stepfather, who swindled many of the residents of Parable, Montana out of their life savings. While they both have personal issues to deal with, Slade and Joslyn are attracted to each other, even though neither is sure exactly what they want out of life right now …
First line: “You weren’t at the funeral,” Slade Barlow’s half brother, Hutch Carmody, accused, the words rasping against the underside of a long, slow exhale.
Cover thoughts: I think think is a gorgeous cover that lets the reader know they are in for a western story.
What I liked: The characters. Miller excels at creating both likable heroes and heroines, along with lovable pets, and Slade and Joslyn are no exception. I also enjoyed the vivid descriptions of the western landscape.
What I didn’t like: The story followed a predictable pattern. Also, I didn’t think there was all that much romance in the story, as it is more about Slade and Joslyn coming to terms with their pasts rather than them falling in love with each other.
Overall: Another solid, if predictable, read from Miller. It should appeal to those looking for a heartwarming story with a western vibe.
Would I read this author again: Yes. I usually enjoy Miller’s books, and I’m looking forward to reading more by her.
My grade: C-
