Stephen King's second collection of short stories, including well-known pieces like "The Mist" and "The Raft," and a likeable author's note. King always comes off well when addressing his readers directly.
This is a collection, and some stories are better than others. King is at his best when the presentation of the premise is the least complicated. His "Oh crap, there's this thing and it's getting my friends and now it's going to get me" stories like "The Mist" are great, scary and uncomplicated. Things falter a bit when he dresses up his stories, like having two oldtimers sitting around narrating the "Shortcut" story. It can feel extraneous and weigh the story down.
There is some debate if King is a bonafide good writer, or a successful, good purveyor of genre fiction. The material in this small chunk of his huge collection of work pushes the argument towards "good genre writer," but what the hell, the word "good&
