This is a companion book for the show written by the niece of the creator Julian Fellows (who provides the foreword). Each chapter discusses different aspects of the time and how the characters of Downton Abbey might have been affected by them. Pictures and quotations from the actors are interspersed within every chapter, along with quotations and information about people who lived through the time. The final chapter goes behind the scenes to discuss how the show is made.

Readers should note that this is a companion to the first two seasons, so there is a lot of information about the war and virtually no spoilers. While it was lovely to see all the pictures and read about the time period I would have preferred more "making of" information. The trend in recent years seems to be more towards these companion books such as The Cranford Companion instead of The Making of Pride and Prejudice (BBC), which devotes itself entirely to how the show was put together and is considerably shorter. Overall a must have for those who adore the show.
