It's a fun little epic with plenty of twists to keep the reader guessing as to what would come next--up to a certain point. It's pretty obvious the three main characters would stay alive and, from the cover picture, one of the guys will cover himself in tattoos.

Brett weaves three tales together nicely so it's not so fanciful to believe the three stranger could meet or join forces.

My only criticism is that Peter Brett falls into the same trap that almost all writers do when including a desert tribe: He makes them all Muslim analogs and must invent new Arabic sounding words for concepts already introduced and used in the book. Instead a guard one is now "dama" or instead of a merchant, a man is a "khaffit" and then the author has to spend time translating. The authors describe vast cultures and their differences in their books, but once some sand is introduced, it's "Bring in the Mozzies!"
