I was instructed that this IS the classic narrative of character development, so was reading it with that critical viewpoint. I thought the character development was interesting and the story was interesting but I would disagree with the instructor. I've read many many far better narratives of character development. In one novel I read many years ago the first sentence told me all I needed to know to understand the character, yet the next two pages went on to fill out the character. It was a modern novel by a repeatedly bestseller list author. I suppose that isn't "literary" enough?
