Although I've slackened off a bit in the last few years, the series which this book kicked off has been a favorite ever since its beginning. A full picture of Victorian society is given, both the ever-so-genteel upper middle-class household of Charlotte Ellison and the sinkholes of vice that often inspire the murders in each novel. Sometimes it's hard to believe Charlotte's bravery and disregard for social conventions, but a look at history and memoirs from that era will show that women like her did exist. Highly recommended.
