When You Were Mine is a YA modernization of Romeo and Juliet, but only sort of. When I first discovered the link to the Shakespeare tale, I wasn’t sure I wanted to read another retelling (I’ve read a lot lately), but I gave it a shot, anyway. This is the story told from the perspective of the girl Romeo (who is named Rob in this one) is in love with before he meets Juliet, Rosaline. It also has all its own secrets and twists. So, while you know some of the basic way the story goes, this is still an original tale. Obviously, there are some sad parts, but the book as a whole was fun and surprising. It is a romance, primarily, so keep that in mind. I recommend this for all teenagers struggling with finding their place in the world.
