I've heard Kerouac referred to as America's most overrated writer, but that's unfair. He has a lyrical style that seems so effortless, like he's talking about nothing, just riffing nonsense, when he's grabbing onto a whole scene. He's one of a handful of writers that have a distinct voice. On the Road is obviously Kerouac's best book, but Dharma Bums is charming as well.
