So, I think this book was maybe slightly better than the first one (Pillars of the Earth), although it's been a few years since I read that one. I have to give Ken Follett credit for keeping me entertained for 800+ pages. (The problem is, this book is 1000 pages... I thought it lost steam at the end.) Also, it is fascinating to read about England in the 1300s. How grateful I am that I didn't live during those times. Yikes.

But I just can't give it any more than three stars. Just like the first book, the characters fell flat. The good guys were too good and the bad guys were too bad. Also, a few too many times I felt like I was reading a Harlequin romance. The sex scenes were a bit gratuitous and eye-roll inducing.
