This was a decent young adult book but not particularly well suited to ESL students. While the main character, Frankie (Francisco) is growing up in a biracial Mexican/American family, his problems are not necessarily related to the immigrant experience. The book does have interesting themes of racial tension, the need to earn "respect", and what it really means to be tough. There's enough violence, swears, and sex to keep reluctant readers engaged. Could be a good addition to a classroom library for independent reading but not a must have.
