One day, Elizabeth George may write a book with a happy ending. This isn't it. Normally I can deal with the intensely unhappy subject matter because of the strong plot and characters. I have always found Deborah to be the weakest character in this series and her involvement in this plot felt forced. Regardless of her personal issues, I absolutely could not find any basis for reality in her involvement in Lynley's case.

I also found Barbara's continued work conflict with the Acting Superintendent bizarre-who sneaks into work when the are supposedly on vacation? And if an employer in my home state ever tried to force an employee to pretty up her appearance they would be facing a lawsuit stat.

On the other hand, I continue to love Lynley and Barbara's characters and then end of the book ensured I will keep reading to find out what happens to both of them.
