Grave Sight (Harper Connelly, #1)
by Charlaine Harris
by Charlaine Harris
What an intense book. It really doesn’t seem to be an intense read, when you first start the story. However, it continually builds and builds; the evolving tension is almost imperceptive. As you read on; the friction builds and intensifies; but you don’t to realize it right away – or, at least, I didn’t.
I’ve read one book in this series before and enjoyed it. However, I did not remember how intense and gripping the story was. This second book was in the same vein. It starts out tame enough; interesting, enjoyable and it peaks your interest. However, somewhere along the line it goes from being a good mystery to a gripping and intense mystery.
I must say, these stories have an underlying, depressive feeling. I guess that’s to be expected, in a way; when the heroine has a talent for finding dead bodies for a living. If she is given a relatively good approximation of where the body may be, she can locate that body and see, relive the moment of death. She does not see the killer; if that is the case. She only realizes, understands and often relives what caused the death of that person; whether it is natural causes or murder.
At times, the story was a bit tedious and I did find myself being somewhat annoyed by the small town, county, corrupt sheriff and government conspiracy theory aspect of the story. This is explained, well, in end; but as you’re reading, you wonder if this is building to a conclusion or just a bit of a cliché.
I do think I will read more in this series; however, I will need to space my reads. This is not a light read, as far as I’m concerned. Though they have been good reads, they also seem to be intense enough to require some space between ventures.
