Perfect rhythm and rhyme make this book well suited for its intended audience. The rhyme helps the concept of counting to ten sink into young children's minds. More detailed information about the plants, animals, and caterpillars themselves make it interesting enough for those in kindergarten to enjoy beyond the concept of counting. Lois Ehlert's illustrations are always superb collages.
