The forward by E.M. Forster tells us this story was written by an educated Indian who started out as an Untouchable. With that in mind, the story was difficult to read as it made the reader feel the hopelessness with which this caste spent its every waking hour. The ending provides some hope with the words and actions of Mahatma Gandhi. All in all, a reasonably good read.
