bookshelves: amazon-vine, read-in-2012, badly-behaving-author, authors-to-avoid, bully
Read from June 01 to 03, 2012

I received this book as part of Amazon's Vine program and at the time was quite excited to read it but sadly I wasn't as excited by the time I ended the novel. While I was happy to see that the book thankfully had no glorification of cheating in the story lines, which is a running theme with most of Giffin's work, it still fell flat for me when compared to Something Borrowed/Something Blue. I never really clicked with either of the heroines of the novel - Marian and Kirby were both a bit too one-dimensional for my liking and I honestly thought the storyline of the adoption was a bit trite and unbelievable. The ending really irked me and left me not feeling keen on everything that lead up to that moment. An interesting premise for a story but it wasn't well executed for me.

In the aftermath of my review I received a lot of hateful comments from Emily and her legions of fans she sicced on me once seeing my review which means that it will be a LONG time before I read one of her books again.

Fran I’m appalled. I mean truly and utterly appalled by this situation. The behavior of this author, her family and her fans is embarrassing and unconscionable. I cannot imagine being proud or feeling honored by a spouse/partner who publically displays such stupidity and immaturity. The fans who squee that Giffin’s husband is so honorable and wonderful must have an entirely different set of values, professional ethics and sense of decorum than I. The author is showing the world what a twit she is by her bad behavior. Professionals use social media *professionally*. They do not use it as an extension of their ego like sad little children who never learned appropriate public behavior. Furthermore, I’m baffled by the fans who state that a book should be reviewed solely on the merit of the writing and then go on to bash reviewers for things that have nothing to do with the review. Claiming that outside influences shouldn’t be taken into consideration when reviewing a book (or any product) is naïve to the point of being ridiculous.

Regarding the actual book(s) in question: I’ve always thought that Giffin’s writing was juvenile and her plots tepid and uninteresting. I have tried to read a few of her books, and I always stop due to lack of interest. This book was no different from the rest. You know the type of books I read, so it isn’t like I’m claiming some intellectually superior position. Haha. I just think her books are meh. The author’s behavior will preclude me from ever attempting to read her books in the future. (Edited a typo)

Corey I ended up writing my own blog about this.

Julie Wow just read your blog post on the EG fiasco. Very bad behaviour on the part of Emily Giffin, her husband, her personal assistant and those of her fans who responded to her battle call and attacked reviewers online. If Emily Giffin does not want to be judged on the basis of her public behaviour, she should stop posting her every thought on her Facebook page. Her boo-hoo poor me sad face on posting her lowly #2 position on the NYT best sellers list is just embarrassing. She should be grateful that she is on that list at all; there are many more-deserving authors who are not.

Caroline Corey, I ended up reading all about this debacle on http://mybookgoggles.blogspot.com/201... . You have my support 100% . I have never read anything by Giffin, but had been planning on it. Now? Forget it. I just cannot believe this happened. This whole thing is so upsetting to me on so many levels. :*(

Caroline Julie, I was thinking the same thing. Disappointed about being NUMBER TWO?! That's like whining over getting an A- instead of an A+. Unbelievable.
