A memoir written in free verse, a first person telling of the life and memories of the One and Only Ivan, gorilla extraordinaire. Ivan has spent most of his life on display in a glass cage for a stressed out show manager. His life is defined by his warm relationships with the animals around him, a performing elephant and dog show and a stealthy stray dog. He is befriended by the janitor's daughter, a young artist who shares her crayons and paper with Ivan who expresses himself with the tools she gives him.
There are so many themes to ponder as we read Ivan's gentle words and mentally wander with him as he reminisces about his life and views his and his friends future.
When a new, young elephant comes to the show, Ivan takes matters into his own hands and forges a new path for everyone at the show.
Deceptively short, this book has an impact that will stay with you.
