I was fortunate enough to win a review copy of this from Goodreads and had a great time reading it. No matter what name she happens to be writing under at the time, I always Jayne Ann Krentz's books, and this latest was no exception. Crystal Gardens, written under the name Amanda Quick, is the story of hired companion Evangeline Ames who has come to the country town of Little Dixby to rest after a frightening attack back in London, as well as to pursue her new career as a writer. Lying awake in bed one night, she hears an intruder break into her cottage and flees out the window toward the mysterious gardens of her nearest neighbor. There, she meets the new owner of Crystal Gardens, and her landlord, Lucas Sebastian. Danger comes at Lucas and Evangeline from several sources all at once, from treasure hunters seeking legendary Roman gold hidden in the gardens of Lucas' estate, from Evangeline's last job back in London which had sent her to the country in the first place, and from Lucas' investigation into the possible murder of his uncle from who he's inherited his new home. We meet two of Evangeline's fellow hired companions from London, the Ladies of Lantern Street, and members of Lucas' family as they descend on his house. As the story unfolds, we follow Evangeline and Lucas as they use their paranormal abilities, as well as their previous experience as investigators, to get to the bottom of all their troubles. I really enjoyed both the hero and the heroine in this story and found the descriptions of the mysterious gardens, the Roman treasure, and the main character's psychic abilities really interesting. Overall, this was a very enjoyable read and I would definitely recommend it.
