Bk 2 of a series of swashbucklers set in 1620s Spain. P-R seems (from the two books of his I've read) to have trouble meshing setting with story - many chapters start with a long description of the location for the scene, then linking the action with such phrases as "such was the tavern into which the Captain strode, stroking his bushy moustache". So P-R has done his historical research well, but he does not integrate it very well into the story. However, the story as a whole was a bit better padded than the previous one, and the characters (which I suspect are the focus, not the plot) have become a bit more filled in. 2.5/5
