This is a beautiful book. Before I read it, I heard contradicting reports of it being both gripping and slow. I think I understand both perspectives. The story in Cold Mountain is sparse, the path of it clear from the very start, and the pacing of it is even and slow. Nothing moves quickly. But under the surface of the story is the thread of a passion, and a fight for survival that is completely engrossing. Everyone in this book is absolutely driving, clawing their way through enormous obstacles to find home. Think of it as a strong undertow in water that is otherwise calm.
