In one of P. D. James' mysteries, an author's work is described as being "fastidious observation, wedded to eloquently sensitive and oblique prose." I think that quote could be used to describe James' own work! Her mystery novels are either about poet-cum-inspector Adam Dalgliesh, or private detective Cordelia Gray. I enjoy her earlier novels better than the later ones, though, as they become longer and more diffuse.
