** spoiler alert ** I give this a 4.5 stars, rounding up to a 5. I really enjoyed it...it was well written...plus it was a historical fiction, which is my favorite genre. I cried at least twice in the middle of the book and I think off and on the whole last 30 pages or so. I can't imagine either giving up my 5 year old and not going with them or being the 5 year old and going off to some strange place. Mr. Brennert developed all the characters well...I felt for all of them. I loved Sister Catherine and can not believe she didn't know whether she was going to heaven or not...are you KIDDING me? You gave over 30 years to helping cast out people with leprosy on a remote part of an isolated island. If she's not going straight to heaven, we're all doomed. I felt for Rachel's father...I wish he would have stayed. I can't image what her sister Sarah felt in the way of guilt. This was a great book that I'd highly recommend.
