Weisman explores not only what the world would be like if we disappeared today (charting the decay of our cities the way a coroner charts the decay of our flesh), but what the world would be like if we had never existed. The journey leads through places like the New York sewer system and the Aberdares preserve in Kenya, back and forth through time, and includes interviews with such specialists as structural engineers and paleoecologists. Through it all, Weisman brings to life the amazing organism that is the Earth.
