It’s hard to read a lot of these romanticists nowadays, and Lermontov is no exception. While certain parts ring true, other parts just seem drawn out and irrelevant. But when I read it, I think of Pechorin as a second-rate Julien Sorel. Honestly, the first part of the book—which really isn’t even the meat of it-- when the relationship between Maksim and Bela unfolds was significantly more interesting to me then Pechorin’s sorry-ass journal.
