I stumbled upon this series while lurking in the cozy group at LibraryThing. I am so glad I did!

It's the late 1800's and Sarah Brandt, formerly of an affluent family in New York City, is a midwife. During a birthing she sees a face she recognizes from her former days and later learns of that young girl's death. Moved by the girls young age and the connection to her family Sarah finds herself paired with a New York detective trying to solve the murder.

The details of historical New York were wonderful. I loved the characterizations of both Sarah and Detective Malloy. The mystery was full of twists and turns that kept it exciting and made the book a real page turner.

I can't wait to read the next one in the series!
