I found Skellig had a unique magical strangeness about it that kept me engaged and interested throughout. The key protagonist is a young boy, Michael, dealing with changes in his life. He has recently moved house and his new born baby sister is seriously ill.

Michael explores his new surroundings and stumbles across a homeless stranger, Skellig, living in his garage, who isn’t quite as he seems. Michael, along with his interesting new home educated friend, Mina, tries to help Skellig with his arthritis. Skellig reveals his mysterious abilities and repays Michael’s kindness by miraculously curing his baby sister.

This is a great book for key stage two; I believe pupils would find the mystery behind Skelig intriguing.
