I'd probably give thsi 3.5 stars, but rounded up. It's not YA, probably because it's too dark and sexual, and technically these are supposed to be college-aged students, but it's in the vein of so many popular dark and lovely YA novels. This is the first one in a while that I haven't lost interest in two-thirds of the way through though, which is why I rounded up.

There are lots of characters and due to possession and other supernatural factors it's hard to keep track sometimes of who's who, but I didn't find this to be all that bad. The writing makes up for most of the foibles. Though far from excellent, it is a lush, imagined world and the imagery captures that. I was rarely taken out of my reading by anachroisms and poor diction, though it did happen once or twice.

There was enough romance to keep the romantics involved, and enough plot outside of the romance to keep others from jumping ship. If you like dark fantasy with a fair amount of romance and pain, this is probably for you.
