Most educational history is pretty drab reading, but Brill's account of the most recent battles to break the stranglehold of teachers' unions on public school systems is actually suspenseful and arouses emotions that most historians try to suppress. Brill is a journalist and tries not to take sides in the political fights between union leaders and mayors and school administrators and grant funders like Bill and Melinda Gates. Hard not to say, Fie on all of these people, for turning education into a power and control game. But if the battle leads to a major overhaul of American education, it will be worth it.
