Read from January 17 to 18, 2012

Chess is a short novella by Stefan Zweig that describes a prisoner of war endlessly replaying chess with himself to pass the time. The concept is developed as well as it could be for a story of this length, but the amount of description of the character's past pushes most of the narrative to the sides, which feel rather empty in the beginning and abrupt in the end. Certainly not a bad story, and likely more enjoyable in the original language.
