Wolf! is the story of a wolf that wanders into a small town in search of nourishment and finds solace and a community of friends in the animals that are able readers. The key to inclusion is the wolf's determination to become a reader.

This story fits into the category of "Books About Readers and Reading" that I have collected since 2002 - see my website at: for a list of other books. In these stories, reading is the key to success and children become readers through various means. In general, readers learn to decode and read aloud but comprehension is rarely mentioned.

The bright watercolor images of fictional animals brings a playful mood to the story. Full page illustrations are offered on the right side (recto) while smaller abstract images are offered on the left side (verso). The abstracted images show the wolf donning a hat, glasses and vest as he becomes more "civilized" as a literate character. Reading soothes the savage beast. The story is funny in parts and teaches a lesson about reading and becoming a reader without beating the reader over the head with the lesson
