The Woman in Black is a classic ghost story with all the usual elements including a haunted house and things that go bump in the night. This is the kind of book that I hate to say too much about because the experience of reading it would be best enjoyed in ignorance, letting the story unfold and the atmosphere wash over you. Your enjoyment of this book would probably depend on whether you were able to give yourself over to that atmosphere. I started reading it on a bright sunny winter's morning and realized I needed to stop and wait until dark to light a candle, find a seat by myself in the house, and start to read again. It worked. I don't read a lot of "scary" fiction so for me, this was just the right tone, hitting all the right notes to give me a little chill and make me glad to know the rest of the family was downstairs.
