I read this book because the movie left me with so many unanswered questions. The novel left me with feelings of it being unfinished as well. However, the idea that Clarke sought to portray was so mind-bogglingly huge, there is no way it could have an end, either in the story or in the universe. Although Kubrick's film is one of my favorites, he brings into an alienation and cool detachment which does not exist in Clarke's work.
