This excellently written book contains serval powerful scenes, including the death of the narrator's mother, early in the narrative, and the descriptions of war from the viewpoint of a sniper. However, the storyline did not completely pull me into the novel. The narrator's relationships with his father, his step-mother, and
his adopted brother are important to his development, but somehow seemed to me as if described in black and white instead of living color.

Also, I wish the paperback version I read had included a map so I could have traced the narrator's travels.
I know, I could've looked it up, but if the map had been in the book, I'd have creased the book at that spot.
