Loved it loved it loved it. Beautifully written with a real thread running throughout. I tried so hard to pace myself, but in the end could not put it down and had to sit waiting for my son to have his hair cut, blubbing through the final couple of chapters. A real epic at least as good as The Island. If you like a socio-historical drama, a love story, a travel book, an accurate political description, art, architecture, needlework, food or fashion... this is the book for you!
