Intriguing! Again, just like with Sovay, the writing is so full of detail! I find that if a good chunk of detail and description was left out, the story would only be half as long, but the description and detail is wonderful! I learn a lot about what happened in history just by reading Rees' work.

In this story, Nancy Kington runs away with a slave from her plantation after killing the plantation's head man, Duke. Now, on the run, Nancy and Minerva encounter all kinds of people, live through adventure, tragedy, death and fear all in the name of keeping one step ahead of Bartholome, the Brazilian that Nancy was supposed to marry.

Add some mild romance between Minerva and another pirate, and thread through the story of Nancy's first love, William, who is now a Navy captain, and you have a great story!

As usual, I enjoyed the ending, but my personal style would have liked a little more closure. But that is neither here nor there, as the book was still great!
