Myranda is a character that’s easy to like. She’s struggling to survive in the frozen North and she has surprising compassion and resilience. She also has amazing potential that she discovers throughout the book. She meets all manner of different people and her interactions with them reinforced my positive feelings for her.

The book is set against a fascinating landscape of snow and ice. Seeing Myranda’s struggles against the elements is another glimpse into her character.

Myranda wasn’t the only character that was well-developed either. The other characters in the story were also nicely fleshed out. From the fox-like malthrope to the powerful wizards, the supporting cast did a nice job of lending a believable air of life to the book.

I liked the how this story had an easy rhythm to it versus a fast-paced plot. You got to know the characters. You also had time to familiarize yourself with the various dips and curves of the book, so you knew exactly where you were going and why. I’ll definitely be reading the rest of the trilogy.
