Pat and Isabel don't want to go to St Clare's but once there they learn valuable lessons about decency, thrift, hard work, hiding dogs in attics and social class.

Reread this in one sitting last night. I always think a time will come when I won't love these books any more but I've been rereading them for 30 years now. St Clare's is for life.
