I am surprised this collection of shorts (now morphed into a collection) does not get more attention. One of the most fascinating characters, Abner Doon, strikes of an "Ender Wiggin" type character. The book explores, through a variety of characters, the impact of Somec, a drug that slows down ageing so that imbibers "sleep" through dull periods and only awaken for brief "interesting" periods. Somec provides a "pseudo-immortality". The use of lifeloops is also very similiar to "reality" television.

Readers of sci-fiction will also note how Card's planet, called Capitol, is very similiar to Isaac Asimov's Trantor from the Foundation series. Highly recommend to those who enjoyed Ender's Game or like science-fiction in general.
