Where Men Win Glory by Jon Krakauer is good for what it is: a nonfiction book. This book tells you everything you would want to know about the life and views of Pat Tillman, a professional football player with a lovely wife who gave up all of his luxury to serve his country in the military after the attack on 9/11. Krakaur's obviously very thorough research on this subject really helps you to understand who Pat Tillman was and why he felt called to join the military. Besides excerpts from Tillman's diary and interviews with Tillman's wife, family, friends, and commanders, and former coaches, Krakeur also gives you the setting by giving you the history of what was going on worldwide at different points in Pat's life. For example, he gives you the complete history of the war in Afghanistan and 9/11. However, this is far from an unbiased account of his life because like in almost every nonfiction book, the author's point of view on certain subjects shows through. There are many places in this book where Kraukauer's view on things such as the military, the Bush Administration, and even religion is seen in his tone and diction. As the author, he has the power to decide what things to really accentuate and which ones to play down through his placement of certain quotes. Also, even though Krakauer gives a very accurate account of Tillman's life and lets the reader know who he really was, there are some parts of the book that drag on and are very dull to the average person. For example, he sometimes wonders into multiple military tactics and away from what is actually happening to Pat.
However, it was interesting to read about this man who gave up so much to serve our country. I really admire his sense of duty and patriotism, and his willingness let go of all of his comforts in exchange for the hard job of protecting our country like so many men and women do each day.
