Thompson</a><br/><br/> <a href="http://www.goodreads.com/review/show/2617178?utm_medium=api&utm_source=blog_review"><h3>My review</h3></a> rating: 4 of 5 stars<br/>fear and loathing in las vegas <br/>starts out strong, best opening sequence ever <br/>doing fast miles on the highway while carelessly handling very expensive drugs.... <br/>he jeers/jaunts at the locals, the money, the down. <br/>the shabby run down bit of it <br/>he hits the bar, the dirt races are off, another drink, dust everywhere, visibility 0 <br/>back at the hotel his "attorney" has kidnapped, drugged and done who knows what to this crazy lsd girl. she sits there drawing pictures of streisand with enormous shining eyeballs that look like grapefruits..... <br/> <br/>crazy scenes when everythings seemingly gone wrong, he has the journalist card still hanging from this coat... they must've thought he was some crazy juiced up law official... <br/> <br/>when they pick up the hitchhiker and then stare at his skull... <br/> <br/>inflating rental car tires to a dangerous limit <br/>searching for the american dream <br/>circus circus = "what the whole hep world would be doing saturday night if the nazi's had won the war <br/> <br/>I found this book on one of my parents's book shelves when I was a kid. It was a little yellow paperback and I read it several times. I thought it was a really funny book, very finely tuned humor at play. Meanwhile HST himself was being more and more of a reclusive has been nut. It was sad to see but not entirely surprising given his lifestyle. I read some of later books but really, nothing lives up to <i>Hell's Angels<i/> and Fear&LinLV. <br/>-------------------------------- <br/>I think there are certain books I would prefer for my kids not to read at an early age. I dunno. Fear and Loathing left me with certain bits of wisdom that I've never actually verified yet assume to be true. e.g. HST's doctor's advice when HST complains of sweatiness, then tells the doc his average daily drug intake: "My god! If this... if this is true then sweating is actually a GOOD thing. It indicates that your body's desperately overworked flushing mechanism hasn't shut down." <br/> <br/>It's definitely the case that F&LinL turned me on to a lot of the subtlties of federal politics that were occurring in HST's era. He theorizes that certain decades are into uppers, psychedelics, consciouness expansion, whereas later stages are all about depressants, downers, and it's all keyed to the nation's sociopolitical mood......... do I believe that?
