I did the South Beach diet several years ago and was quite successful, but I didn't read the book. I just flipped through the pages to the lists of "good" and "bad" foods.

This time, I decided to actually read the book. I think it was helpful to know the theory behind the foods and food combinations that help you lose weight and be heart-healthy. Knowing which carbs are good and why "enriched" foods are bad has definitely changed the way I view food. I especially like that the book emphasizes that I should not be hungry on this diet, and that once you're past phase I it's okay to "cheat" once in awhile (although, the only person I'm cheating is myself, which is a little sad).
