Treading into Mary Gaitskill territory, Jennifer Egan's A Visit from the Goon Squad is enjoyable and well wrought, but not what it's cracked up to be. Easily, the best story of the bunch is "Safari," which was initially published in The New Yorker. I found the Foster Wallace pastiche and Powerpoint chapter a tad too cute, though, and the book as a whole ran out of steam as it tried to tie up knots. Structurally, Goon Squad has a lot in common with Rachman's The Imperfectionists, also published last year, also a short story sequence.
