This is the 4th in the Hellions of Halstead Hall series. The Sharpe siblings have been working to meet and/or thwart their grandmother's ultimatum: all five of them marry by the year's end, or all five of them will be disinherited (the title was from their father's side, but the money was all from their commoner grandmother's brewing business). Like his siblings before him, horse racing enthusiast Gabriel has no intention of marrying at first, then he decides to make a side wager with his grandmother: if HE marries, she'll reconsider forcing his baby sister Cecilia to hold to the ultimatum.

I love the way Gabriel approaches this marriage idea so practically and gets so knocked off his feet by Virginia, and I love the way Virginia is so determined to hate him, but can't, how she sees something more under the surface, and realizes there was more to the story of her brother's death than she'd heard before. Gabriel is not the self-styled Angel of Death by choice -- thanks to his parents' deaths when he was young (the mystery of which is still an ongoing thread in this book) he truly believes that he is somehow a harbinger of death for others, and his reckless ways are about trying to reach for death himself. Ms. Jeffries doesn't pull any punches with the emotions in this one -- it's a 5-star keeper for me!
