Eat to live. What a concept.
While most diet books promote the idea of weight loss as the cure to all of your problems, Eat To Live focuses on weight loss AND health (say goodbye to the Atkins!) With ideas that are backed up with science, Joel Fuhrman promotes the idea of eating 90% or more from a plant based diet. Vegetables and fruit are the main groups, and little bits of nuts, seeds, and whole grains are thrown in for balance. Meat is discouraged but "allowed" in his diet plan, for the people who can't fathom the idea of going completely without.
All in all, I really enjoyed the book. I appreciated the fact that he provided references for almost all of his statements. And while I didn't necessarily agree with him on everything, I did find myself nodding along with most of the book.
In fact, if Dr. Fuhrman wouldn't have gotten so much into the "diet aspect" towards the end of the book, I would have really, really liked it. I mean, I know the book is written with weight loss in mind, but still. Nobody wants lettuce with peanut butter and banana for breakfast (right?) As a foodie, I would have liked to see more creativity in his meal planning.
That aside, I still give the book 4 stars. Worth the read. With the takeaway message that we could all use a little more fresh produce in our lives.
