As far as a biography of Nicholas II, I don't think the book is very thorough. It reads more like background for understanding the real meat of the book, the execution of the Czar and his family, which fills a full quarter of the narrative. This last quarter is where the book becomes more interesting. I enjoy the author's approach to explaining the events within the frame of how he pieced them together, as the book was written when many of the details of the execution were just coming to light.I find the book informative and entertaining.
