Makes a good pair with Ondaatje's _The Cat's Table_, although to me it suffers in the comparison. That book truly surprised me in how it opened itself out into something more expansive as it went on, whereas _The Sense of an Ending_ is designed to surprise on its last two pages and to me it felt like a shutting down or narrowing of the novel. I was surprised, to be sure, but in the end the world of this book felt very small to me.
