I was aware of Harbach's skill as a novelist throughout the novel, but that did in no way detract from my enjoyment of the book. I truly loved his sharply-drawn characters, his deft use of literature to counterbalance sports, and some of his nuttiness (like the crazy names of people and places). Most of all, I think, I appreciated how his young characters suffered into adulthood. He portrayed this without making it maudlin, without calling direct attention to it even as it was unfolding.

Some misses, mostly hits.
