I've thoroughly enjoyed the Kane Chronicles and found this a fitting conclusion (?) to the series. Sadie and Carter are winsome characters and their sibling interplay is always entertaining though I appreciate how their their friendship and respect for one another deepens as the series continues. Trouble with Chaos deepens in this book until, of course, the entire world is threatened. The key to defeating Apophis lies within the "shadow" aspect of the soul (a very interesting concept; not as "dark" as it sounds) and I found this aspect of the book (and Egyptian spirituality) quite engaging. Walt and Zia also get their moments in the spotlight here, in some surprising ways, and (as one might expect) their relationships with Sadie and Carter become more complex because of this. Since we are all going about our daily lives and can listen to Sadie and Carter's "recordings" the reader is pretty darn sure the world doesn't end ;-> but there are some tense moments along the way and some doubt as to which character(s) might survive. We also get some good doses of humor, too. The ending felt a little long, but of course much had to be wrapped up since this is (ostensibly) the final recording for the Kane siblings and thus the little loose ends all needed to be tied up nicely. As ever, the audiobook narration by Katherine Kellgren and Kevin R Freed is a delight and I think it definitely enhanced my appreciation of the series. All in all, highly recommended if you are looking for a thoughtful, interesting, humorous and well-written adventure series for the upper middle-grade or young adult range. I also feel it could be enjoyed equally well by boys and girls and, indeed, my husband and I listened to this on a few road trips and we both liked it immensely.
