The intriguing title and the author's fame drew me to this work of juvenile fiction. While the plot has some fascinating turns and some likeable (as well as detestable) characters, the story is too dark for my taste in children's literature. As the subtitle implies, there are some object lessons in the story, but the combined elements of greed, sorcery, medieval poverty, and gruesome graveside scenes would not be pleasant bedtime reading.
