What I most love about Balogh's writing is the care that she takes with her characters. They are inevitably complex, the dialogue is witty and sharp, and appearances are never what they seem. Sex scenes are secondary to the process by which the characters actually grow to know and love each other. A Secret Affair is no different.
Constantine Huxtable and Hannah Reid are two of society's more secretive and scandalous members, but the personas they adopt in society hide intense vulnerabilities and the full spectrum of their personalities. When Hannah decides to take a lover and chooses Constantine, they proceed to discover themselves, each other and love. This is not a story with fast paced action, rash decisions, or childish behavior. It's a beautiful story focused on love of all types and how to embrace it. Although the pace is slow, the story unfurled beautifully and kept me engaged. Definitely a great read.
